Problem

The VIMA REVs incorporate stroboscopic lenses to improve sensory and sensory-motor skills. It does this by taking away varying amounts of visual information, forcing an athlete to be more efficient with the limited, decision-making information that he or she is provided.

Vima needed an app that allows coaches and athletes to control the Vima glasses from their mobile devices.

Project Goals:

  • Use the in-app REV CONTROLLER to connect via Bluetooth® to change Vision Quotient (strobe speed), making it easy for coaches or trainers to lead drills while the athlete stays focused and hands-free
  • Access a video library of training content
  • Track progress in the app
  • Access REV operating instructions
  • Update your VIMA profile

REV Controller:

The REV Controller is the most important part of the app because it controls the physical product. It was clear the buttons needed to be easily accessible to coaches and athletes while wearing the glasses in order to avoid any injury.

My ux decisions:

  • Place the start/stop button towards the bottom of the phone. This is where thumbs typically rest when holding a mobile device. Putting it here makes it easy to start and stop strobing.
  • Make the start/stop button large so the glasses can be turned off quickly without looking down.
  • Give users the option to swipe or tap the VQ number to change the strobe speed.
  • Adjust what side of the glasses are being effected. These settings include:
    • Alternate between left and right lens
    • Turn off left side only
    • Turn off right side only

Mobile App:

While finalizing the controller, I also built high fidelity click-through prototypes for user testing and designed the UI and visuals for the rest of the app experience. App features I added:

  • Create a new account
  • Pair REV app with glasses
  • Use REV controller
  • Provide instructions to:
    • Pair REV glasses
    • Use the controller
    • How to charge your device
    • Change controller settings on the glasses themselves
    • Perform an at-home eye test
      • Use phone camera sensors to determine distance of 10 feet from eye chart
      • Use microphone or keyboard to input test answers
  • Adjust your profile
  • Include in-app training tips
    • Includes training video drills
